Japan tax filing deadlines in English
確定申告 runs Feb 16 – Mar 15 for the prior calendar year. Amended returns, departures, and resident-tax billing explained.
Japan's annual income-tax filing window is February 16 through March 15 of the year after the year the income was earned.
- Income earned in year N → filed between Feb 16 and Mar 15 of year N+1.
- Direct-debit (振替納税) settlement is around April 20.
- You can amend a prior return within 5 years via 更正の請求.
- Resident tax (住民税) is billed separately by your municipality in June of year N+1, based on your filed income for year N.
Departing Japan mid-year
