Reading a 源泉徴収票 (withholding slip)

Field-by-field English walk-through of the 源泉徴収票 employers hand out in January.

The 源泉徴収票 (gensen choushuu hyou) is the withholding slip your employer gives you in January. It summarizes the previous year's salary, how much tax was withheld, and any deductions the employer already applied via 年末調整.

The six fields that matter

  1. 支払金額 — gross salary paid.
  2. 給与所得控除後の金額 — taxable income after 給与所得控除.
  3. 所得控除の額の合計額 — total deductions applied by the employer.
  4. 源泉徴収税額 — income tax withheld.
  5. 社会保険料等の金額 — social-insurance premiums deducted from your pay.
  6. 住宅借入金等特別控除の額 — housing-loan credit (if applied via 年末調整).

If you file a 確定申告, you typically start with fields 1 and 4 (gross + withholding) and let the app recompute the rest. If the employer already handled 年末調整 correctly and you have no other income, you likely do not need to file at all.
