It removes who you are before the AI sees anything
The short version
When you ask TaxNinja AI a question, Kemuri swaps your name, address, and contact details for placeholder tokens before the message is sent. Your My Number is not swapped — it is deleted outright. The AI sees the numbers and the situation, but not who you are. When the answer comes back, your real details are put back on screen for you.
It is always on
Kemuri is not a setting you need to find and switch on, and it cannot be turned off. Every message that goes to the AI passes through it, every time. You do not have to do anything to be protected.
What gets protected
- My Number (12 digits)
- Deleted entirely — including spaced, dotted, and full-width forms
- Your name
- Replaced with a token
- Address-like text
- Replaced with a token
- Email and phone
- Replaced with a token
- Date of birth
- Replaced with a token
- Residence card number
- Replaced with a token
- Corporate number and employer name
- Replaced with a token
- Bank account numbers
- Replaced with a token
What actually gets sent
Mostly amounts, flags, and numbers from the wizard. Not "Taro Yamada in Setagaya" but "employment income ¥6.5M, two dependents".
If it cannot strip something, it does not send
If Kemuri still detects something that looks like a My Number after redacting, it abandons the request rather than sending a partially-cleaned message. It fails safe, not silently.
Where the message goes
Once protected, the message goes to an AI provider in the United States (Anthropic, OpenAI, or xAI). Because that is a transfer outside Japan, using the AI features requires your consent in advance under APPI Article 28. You can withdraw that consent in Account at any time — doing so switches off AI only, and the rest of your filing keeps working normally.
What Kemuri does not do
- It does not decide your tax. Your tax is worked out from the figures you enter and the tax rules — not by Kemuri, and not by the AI.
- It does not make AI answers correct. The assistant is informational and is not licensed tax advice.
- It does not sell or share your return with anyone.
